  1.                   TABLE OF CONTENTS/INDEX GENERATOR

  3.     To mark a piece of text to be included in the index  or  table  of
  4. contents, use the <EFFECTS> command. Go to the start of the text to be
  5. marked,  press <EFFECTS>, pick 'i' for index and 't' for table of con-
  6. tents, and type 'y' to turn the marker on. Then move to the end of the
  7. text, and repeat the same procedure, typing 'n'  to  turn  the  marker
  8. off.

  10.     To mark off sub-entries for the table of contents, insert  two  or
  11. more  toc  markers  before  the text. For every additional marker, the
  12. entry will be indented two additional spaces in the table of contents.
  13.     For the index generator, all you need to do is mark off  an  entry
  14. once.  The  index  generator  will  search the entire text for all oc-
  15. curences of that entry.

  17.     When  you  press  the  <TOC> command, you will be first asked what
  18. leader character you want. This is the character that appears  between
  19. the  text  on the left-hand side and the page number on the right-hand
  20. side. The default character is a period. You are  then  asked  whether
  21. you want the table of contents to be inserted before the first line in
  22. your  file, or saved to a separate file. If you choose the latter, you
  23. will be prompted for the name of the file.

  25.     When you press the <INDEX> command, you are asked whether you want
  26. the index put after the last line of the file, or  written  out  to  a
  27. separate file. If an item occurs on consecutive pages, say 2, 3, 4 and
  28. 5, then the pages will be express as a range (ie "2-5").
